Michelle Rumley

Michelle Rumley, a flutist and private flute teacher, attended San Diego State University to study with Claude Monteux. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance in May 2004, graduating summa cum laude, and received the Outstanding Graduate Award in Music. She maintains an active private studio in San Diego where she has taught flute, piccolo, and recorder for over 20 years. Some of her students have continued their musical studies at fine performance institutions, most recently Oberlin Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, and San Diego State University.
Michelle is a strong proponent of a comprehensive music education and encourages her students to participate in Certificate of Merit: a program through MTAC that not only teaches performance and technique, but also sight reading, music theory, and ear training. Michelle is an active member of the Music Teachers’ Association of California, where she serves as the Certificate of Merit State Chair, and is also an active member of the local Northern San Diego County Branch of MTAC. In addition, Michelle has written music assessment materials for the Music Teachers' Association of California for several years.
In addition to teaching privately, Michelle has worked as a flute coach at University City High School, Rancho Bernardo High School, Westview High School, Mira Mesa High School, Standley Middle School, and Spreckels Elementary School, and the San Diego Youth Symphony. She is also the music teacher at Mission Bay Montessori Academy in University City, where she teaches general music to K-6 grade students and elementary school band.
